These activities tend to focus on a particular policy area – employment, health, education etc. Speakers are invited to address the audience with women being given an opportunity to ask questions and speak about their own experiences of the subject being discussed.

Following each discussion a report is produced. This document, which uses direct quotes from the women attending, is sent to politicians as well as those with responsibility for the key policy areas discussed. Copies are also sent to those who attended the event. Feedback records the sense of empowerment felt by women and their call for change in local and national decisions which affect women’s daily lives.

7 February 2015: 50/50 Conference

The 50/50 campaign for equal representation was one of the key features of the devolution campaign in Scotland. The commitment of women from across all aspects of civic life - trade unionists, churches, women’s organisations and individuals - led to the election of 37% of women as MSPs in the first Scottish Parliament in 1999. Since then, representation has fallen to 33%, and is even less in Local Authorities and for Scottish MPs in the UK Parliament.

This Conference explored the history of the 50/50 campaign – from its early roots in the 1980s to the present day campaign. Over 100 women listened to hear speakers and contributed with their experiences.
