Domestic Abuse Recorded by Police in Scotland, 2008-2009

The Scottish Government’s Crime and Justice Statistical Bulletin (24th November 2009) shows the levels of incidents of domestic abuse recorded by Police in Scotland 2008-2009.

The new figures reveal:
 

  • 53,681 incidents of domestic abuse were recorded in 2008-2009 - this is an 8% increase on the period 2007/2008
  • The most common crime recorded was minor assault (12,518 incidents), followed by breach of the peace (9,650 incidents)
  • Overall indicents of domestic abuse recorded by the police were 1,039 per 100,000 - a rise in figures from the previous period
  • Female victims/male perpetrators represented 84% of all reported incidents
  • 61% of victims had previously experienced domestic abuse
  • Women are most at risk of being victims when they are aged 22-25 years old
  • More incidents of domestic abuse are recorded at the weekend than during the week
  • Nearly 40% of all domestic abuse incidents in 2008-2009 occurred on a Saturday or Sunday
